Lux Aurea by Giorgiko

exhibition | september 2019

The husband-and-wife creative duo composed of Los Angeles-based artists Darren and Trisha Inouye, touch down in Amsterdam for their first international solo exhibition. ‘Lux Aurea’, Latin for ‘Golden Light’, gathered 12 new oil paintings directly inspired by the Dutch painterly tradition, especially the 17th century Golden Age works.

The pieces on show were connected with a recurring motif of a mysterious light source. Forming schoolbook examples of chiaroscuro imagery, these ambiguous glowing objects represent illuminating viewpoints kindling warmth in the cold environments they inhabit. Enwrapping their surroundings with a distinctive colourful shine, these found, manufactured, and bestowed glimmering items symbolise the way our knowledge and perception determine the way we experience reality. Contemporary urban elements seamlessly blend within an authentic atmosphere of old masterpieces, creating a timeless setting that connects the now and the past through the real and surreal.

This show marked a further exploration of the mystical Giorgiko universe, home to lost boys and wayfaring girls, and explores the stories of their wanderings and their dreams of being found again. Giorgiko’s work is constantly influenced by urban culture, fantasy, and classical art.
