Belgium artist ROA is renowned for his large-scale black and white paintings of animals. Starting on the walls of the towns that surrounded his hometown of Ghent, ROA has painted and been commissioned to paint public works on walls around the world.
Context is key in ROA’s work as he generally creates wild/urban animals and birds that are native to the area being painted. Other than the uniqueness of both his subject matter and style, what makes ROA stand out is his ability to work perfectly at every scale. Some people see the subjects as dead, others as content.
ROA was featured in the trailblazing 2011 exhibition ‘Art in the Streets’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles alongside the likes of Banksy, Invader and others. On top of his outdoor murals, ROA has a coveted gallery practice with collectors worldwide seeking out pieces from this anonymous artist.
Over the month of April 2018, ROA was The Garage’s artist in residence as part of the Salon Session series, resulting in the creation of 5 new and unique works.
